This is the underlying error:

Aug 9 11:13:18 ubuntu grub-installer: The file /boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly.
Aug 9 11:13:18 ubuntu grub-installer: error: Running 'grub-install --no-floppy "(hd0)"' failed.

I'm not sure exactly what problem this is likely to be as yet.
