I increased my available space and attempted to install Xubuntu again. This time it was successful. However, I was unable to download the available updates due to lack of disk space.

The total disk space used (du -hc /) was 2.2G--with nothing but default Xubuntu applications installed. As noted above, the Get Xubuntu page indicates that only 2GB is required for installation.

Also, the full OpenOffice.org suite was installed. Uninstalling OOo reduced disk usage to 2.0G. It seems to me that OOo is probably not the only unnecessary program being installed and hogging disk space.
