The person who set up my computer initially made one small mistake - hda is set in the BIOS in LBA mode, while hdc (an identical drive) is in CHS mode. Grub does not like this and won't successfully load the second-stage boot manager from a partition on hdb.
I was able to complete the installation from the 'alternate' install CD and a small root partition on hda. I'm not sure if this problem caused the Ubuquity crash, but it might be related.
