What the heck, here's the whole shooting match. Tarball of /var/log attached (while still in installer).
I should note: I did not watch to see formatting behavior on all partitions, but the problem manifested on ALL partitions that I did watch (four or five of them at least). This included small (20Gb or less) and large (250Gb).
The machine is an HP Proliant ML350, the "disk" being formatted is actually a hardware RAID 5 array of three 250Gb drives (for apparent space of 500Gb).
