Workaround:

1. Install ubiquity-frontend-gtk;
2. Edit the "Install Kubuntu" shortcut. In the command field, instead of "ubiquity kde_ui", put "ubiquity gtk_ui".

Done!

Wouldn't switching to Calamares solve this problem?

Edit: alternatively, instead of putting ubiquity gtk_ui, just put "ubiquity" in the shortcut.
