The lifespan of the release is not part of the equation. You only need room for three kernels to support updates. If kernels aren't being auto removed correctly (which hasn't been mentioned here), there is no partition size large enough to accommodate unbounded growth.

If the kernel images / initrds themselves have gotten bigger, or if the partition sizing doesn't account for the signed kernel image, we should make sure the partition is sized appropriately for current kernels.
