Hi Phillip,

Thanks for your response.

I¹m working on a MacMini i7 OS X 10.10 with plenty of resources.
I was attempting to install ubuntu as a virtual machine under Parallels
Desktop 9.
I have limited experience with earlier ubuntu versions operating on other
machines either under Parallels or VirtualBox. Always as a guest OS.

I took the defaults that were presented, except for memory where I
selected 2GB from a large recommended range. Included 8GB partitioned
disk, as I recall.

First time, a warning appeared, that of 3 listed allocations of disk space
for the installation, the second item was 2.65 as I recall, and 3.5 was
desired. But I didn¹t know how to change these individual allocations.
So I tried to proceed, regardless. Didn¹t get anywhere.

Second time I increased the overall size of the partitioned disk for the
VM. In the Parallels configuration screen it is described as up to 64GB
expandable.

I am just attempting to open the VM now. It reports a system error. The
mouse only exists on the ubuntu desktop. I had to use a command-tab to get
back to this message.

That¹s all I can tell you about it.

There is another issue that showed up that makes ubuntu unusable in any
case. That is: The Display defaults to a very low resolution, and I
cannot change it. So low that one cannot ever get to most of the control
buttons in any window.

With u 14.04LTS the default display is 1440 x 900, and that works fine.
But more to the point, one can change the resolution in that version.

Thanks,

Lou

You mean 14.04 works but 14.04.2 doesn't? I also can't figure out what kind of messages you are describing. Could you start over and try the installation again and maybe take a screen shot of this error message?

Yes, that¹s right.

Here¹s some screen shots:
14.04:
 General Config
Display (which offers optional res choices)
14.04.2
 General Config
HDD (this is just like 14.04 except for the name)
Install error (hard to read because of low-res; on first install, res was
OK, then changed to this 800x600)
Install error closeup (still can¹t read it, but it¹s about insufficient
disk space)
 Display (which I can¹t change)

And Crl-Alt doesn¹t give me back control of the mouse outside the U
desktop; I have to Alt-Tab to non-U window to get the mouse back.

I¹ll send this off to you now. Meanwhile 14.04.2 is downloading and
installing some updates.

Of all of those the only one that is relevant is the error message. I don't know why you wrapped the images in a pdf ( please don't do that ), but it seems to have made it unreadable.

Still very difficult to read. First word in the series of 3 indented
items is ³partition² I think.

It is still completely unreadable. You need to not shrink it down so that it only has 12 pixels.

Don¹t assume that I shrunk it. I did not.

That¹s the other problem: The U 14.04.2 desktop comes up too small, with
too little resolution.

There is nothing I can do to improve the legibility of that message.

As an alternative, I installed the same 14.04.2 file as a VM under
VirtualBox. The only difference in install options appears to be the
format of the U disk partition. I selected the VirtualBox choice, rather
than HDD, which was the choice for a VM that would operate under Parallels
as well.

There were no error messages. However, after installing and restarting,
once again the desktop size is small and the res low‹640x480, something
like that. And the so-called built-in display does not permit changes.

So again, the U VM is of no use, because any window one opens on the U
desktop, is taller than the desktop. While one can slide the inner window
from side to side to view the horizontal extent, you can¹t see the lower
part of the window.

You can read it on your screen right? Then somewhere between there and saving that image, the resolution has been reduced. Why don't you type out the message? Looking at the image again and straining my eyes, it appears to be saying more or less "I'm going to write these changes to disk, do you want to go back or continue?" That's not an error.
