The second time I tried to install, the partitioning from the first attempt had in fact gone through as planned despite the error message, and the subsequent install went without a hitch.

I have the same bug, trying to install in a fresh SSD, it crashes during the localitation selection which means is the partition process.
Also screen goes black and it starts the discret nvidia graphic card(I have a led on the laptop) but it goes back to the intel. but the screen stays black with the mouse on it

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. If you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running only once:
apport-collect 1338279

and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
