This bug is still present in 14.04. Unless I select the LVM option, Ubiquity will just give the ??? ???? error. Installation continues until it attempts to install grub and it failes with "Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed. This is a fatal error". I chose the option to download updates during installation so that could be a grub bug.
