In the City menu, it seems that the only city offered in India is Kolkata, which is the fourth largest and not particularly central. No offense to the Kolkatans, but if only one Indian city is to be included, it would make more sense for it to be Mumbai; if two, Mumbai and Delhi; if three, Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore.

It seems this is much more of a political can of worms than I thought initially.

Was this just a casual observation, or do you want to actively pursue this? If so, we need to discuss it with upstream, introducing changes relative to upstream will bring us into a maintenance hell (and lead to irrevocable situations if e. g. India ever decides to split time zones).

Martin, no, it is neither a casual observation nor something I have time to actively pursue. It is a bug in Ubiquity, which is why I reported it as one. I think that is true regardless of the amount of bikeshedding that takes place on a mailing list that is neither related to the upstream project nor apparently capable of discussing the topic seriously. Windows Vista and Mac OS X both get this right: they both list Chennai, Mumbai, and New Delhi as well as Kolkata. That Ubuntu does not makes this part of it look 62 years out of date.

I encountered this problem when I tried to select Mumbai, India in the map and got Colombo, Sri Lanka instead because it was closer than Kolkata was.

It seems like there are two issues that bugged you, mpt:
1) Kolkata is given as the city that represents India, when it is not the most intuitive city.
2) Clicking in southern India yields Colombo, Sri Lanka instead.

In Karmic now, the fact that the map operates on Kolkata is obscured by the timezone being listed as "India Time". Kolkata is still the pinpoint highlighted in the map, but the name Kolkata does not appear.

The second point is a more systemic problem then just India, but it's good to collect a list of such problem areas. I'll leave this bug open.
