On edgy with totem-gstreamer I tried to use the wvx files available at http://www.wsa.soton.ac.uk/choosing-wsa/streaming-video/default.asp
There was no player known for this file. I have the necessary codecs for windows media player, so browsing to /usr/bin/totem in firefox caused totem to fire up and it worked fine.
The file is a redirect to a windows media file:
<ASX version = "3.0"> <ENTRY> <REF HREF = "mms://mms.soton.ac.uk/art_fashion/fashion2005_390k.wmv"/> </ENTRY> </ASX>
http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=WVX lists the mime type as video/x-ms-wvx
As totem parses this it should be added to the system mime listings.
