I recently ran into this problem with an unencrypted DVD as well. I simply did:

aptitude install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

Which solved the problem. There was no need to uninstall any other plugins, just install the ugly plugins. This is more a problem with the plugin detection IMO than it is an error of anything.
