Bug Description

I have downloaded all the codecs and other updates I could find on the multiuniversal and universal repositories. Do I need to change the preferences for DVD's to be played?

Which totem backend are you using, and what version of the totem package do you have installed? Does this occur with all DVDs or just one particular one?

What packages have you installed to try to get DVD working?

Oops, waited too long on my comment.

Try the totem-xine package.

I tried to find the totem-xine update or file and could not find it
anywhere. Where do I go to find it?

How do I find out what Backend I am using?

Thanks for the replies.

To find out which backend you are using, open Totem, go to Help | About and it should be listed under the Totem version number.

To install totem-xine, open System | Administration | Synaptic Package Manager, search for 'totem-xine', mark it for installation by right-clicking the totem-xine package and then click the Apply button. This will install totem-xine, which will just be called 'Movie Player' or 'Totem' in the Applications menu. Then try to play a DVD using it!

Hope this helps

I have two machines, one being an x86 and the other being an AMD64. I installed gstreamer0.8-plugins on both machines. On the x86, DVD's play fine. On my AMD64 machine I receive the "Could not read title information for DVD" error as stated in the previous posts.

I have gotten around the problem for the time being by simply installing totem-xine on my AMD64 machine which plays DVD's without error.

Hi Eric

Could you run Totem from the terminal and try to play a DVD? You'll get some messages printed in the terminal, could you attach them to this bug please?

I'm thinking it's a missing package or libdvdcss or similar.

Attached are the output messages I receive when running Totem from the command line. I have the following packages installed on my AMD64 machine:

gstreamer0.8-dvd (0.8.11-0ubuntu5)
gstreamer0.8-plugins (0.8.11-0ubuntu5)
libdvdnav4 (0.9.4-5)
libdvdread3 (0.9.4-5)
totem (1.2.0-0ubuntu3)
totem-gstreamer (1.2.0-0ubuntu3)

These packages are all installed on my i386 machine as well.

Could you run "dpkg -l libdvd\*" and copy that to a comment? "libdvdnav4 (0.9.4-5)" seems not a correct version for that package

Hello, Sorry about that, I had the wrong version above, libdvdnav4 is actually 0.1.9-3. I get the same output below on both of my PC's:

There are a couple of lines in your error message:

libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.

Do you have libdvdcss installed? See the forums for instructions:

Hi Phil

I installed libdvdcss and still receive the following error when attempting to play a DVD:
(totem:13521): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_accel_label_set_accel_closure: assertion `gtk_accel_group_from_accel_closure (accel_closure) != NULL' failed

(totem:13521): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_accel_label_set_accel_closure: assertion `gtk_accel_group_from_accel_closure (accel_closure) != NULL' failed
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.5 for DVD access
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.

It is strange though because on my i386 machine libdvdcss2 is not installed and these DVDs play fine.

Do you get a different error message after installing libdvdcss?

Eric Fallon (eric-fallon) wrote :

Yes, the error message changed after I installed libdvdcss. Before it was:

libdvdread: Encrypted DVD support unavailable.
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.

After installing libdvdcss it became:

libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.5 for DVD access
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.

Did the graphical error message in Totem change at all? Or do you still get 'Could not read title information for DVD'?

Today the Totem-xine is working properly.
