The subtitles are built into the movie file I was trying to watch. I have found that a tool called mkvextract (package mkvtoolnix) can be used to extract the subtitles. Unfortunately, this program generates an unhandled exception each time I run it with proper parameters. I haven't found another way to do it on Linux yet.
