This is messy, but fixed it for me in 9.04 (Jaunty): sudo apt-get remove vlc sudo apt-get install libdvdread4 sudo apt-get install libdvdnav4 sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly sudo apt-get install totem-xine sudo apt-get autoremove sudo apt-get update;sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install vlc
DVDs work now in both totem and vlc, w/ proper DVD menus in vlc and in totem-xine
