There may be good reasons for webmasters to avoid GIFs. Some webmasters will use them anyway. Perhaps they are ignorant of these reasons, or perhaps they disagree with them. It really doesn't matter.

A well-designed web browser will display a subpar web page -- including nonconforming HTML and, yes, nonoptimal image formats -- despite such a page's design flaws. A poorly designed web browser will decide what webmasters should and should not do, and attempt to police them by choosing to hide parts of their pages. This more likely to drive users to a better web browser than it is to make recalcitrant webmasters change their pages.

It isn't your (or my, or any other individual's) place to decide what is "of value" across the entire world wide web. Users are diverse and find value in an enormous range of things.

(NOTE: substitute "TIFF" for "GIF" above for an equally valid reason this bug should be fixed)
