Sorry for the confusion. The second statement is true. It is not possible to use my extension without applying my patch to Mozilla's C++ code and rebuilding Thunderbird. You also need to use Enigmail or Mnenhy with that patched Thunderbird.
The comments that confused you were referring to a particular part of my original patch, which had to be removed. This was what reinstated the requirement for Mnenhy or Enigmail.
