I can't seem to find mozilla-traybiff-common in the repository. Do I need to add a software source?

Are you referring perhaps to Firetray? https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4868 Firetray doesn't work for me since it won't allow you to be notified of incoming mail while thunderbird is closed. Yes this is the criteria and nux of the problem. Firetray is a bad solution because it merely starts thunderbird minimised and maintains the idea that nothing needs to be changed in Thunderbird.

Keeping Thunderbird running, and out of the way, nested, is a good idea. Reason is pretty obvious -- you will be alerted whenever new mail arrives, the minute it arrives, saving you time and energy and avoids the open-quit-open-quit syndrome. Also, an email programme shouldn't take up so much desktop attention and space, but rather operate in the background, only coming up when needed.

This flaw is common to a lot of programmes in Ubuntu, and I am in the process of motivating for some form of shared design specifications or common resources on Brainstorm that will give Ubuntu users a better experience.

If this makes it into Karmic, I would consider it real good Karma.
