There's no limit to the offline file store cache, so if the message is in the offline file store, saving attachments should just use the offline file store.

You can tell if the message is in the offline store by going offline (file menu, offline, work offline) and then clicking on the message. If we tell you the message body has not been downloaded, then it's not in the offline store.

The disk and memory cache complicate this quite a bit. Also, simply clicking on a message with a large external attachment should not end up with it getting put in the offline store. You'd need the imap auto sync to do that, or the aforementioned download now button.
