Disabling cardbook add-on has resolved my lagging message list. It's not perfect, but it's fast now. If I toggle the message pane with f8, make the window really wide, it's still laggy, but I never use Thunderbird this way, and the lag is nothing compared to the lag I had with cardbook enabled.
