+1. Webrender on/off does not matter here at all.

Maybe also worth mentioning:
I am on a 10th gen Intel GPU with 6.0.9-zen1-1-zen kernel

Boring workaround:

Switch to classic view and move the reading pane up until the message list is snappy enough
