Yesterday's Ubuntu update did not fix this bug. It goes one step further, however, and I can see the add-on check being done, and the main window briefly appears, and then it crashes.
However, I was able to right-click on the Thunderbird icon, select "Compose New Message", and this worked.
But alas, right now Thunderbird on Ubuntu is still very much broken.
