trusting you are all correct => regression. But it seems odd this is also reported as broke in 1.5 per bug 325723

someone can use the builds at http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/nightly/ to narrow the time frame of the regression. I've forgotten at the moment if you should use mozilla1.8.0/ mozilla1.8/ builds (too early in the morning)
