Bug Description

Now that thunderbird (and firefox, see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1028266) have switched from the MPLv1/GPL/LGPL tri-license to MPL 2.0, /usr/share/doc/thunderbird/copyright should reflect this. Also, /usr/share/doc/thunderbird/MPL.gz should be updated, or removed if the MPL 2.0 would be included in /usr/share/doc/thunderbird/copyright.

Also, based on a quick look, the license list in this file seem to lack quite a few of the licenses in the list one can see at about:license (help -> about thunderbird -> licensing information).

This is for thunderbird 14.0 in Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04.

Hello Janne,
Thank you for submitting this bug and reporting a problem with Thunderbird.

You made this bug report in 2012 and there have been several versions of Ubuntu and Thunderbird since then.

Could you confirm that this is no longer a problem and that we can close the ticket?
Or, if it is still a problem, could you run the following (only once):
apport-collect BUGNUMBER

and upload the updated logs and and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu and Thunderbird better.

G

The bug is still present with thunderbird 1:52.8.0+build1-0ubuntu0.16.04.1 on "16.04.4 LTS (Xenial Xerus)".

The system where I checked this does not have apport-collect installed.

Hi Janne,
Attached are screen prints from my Ubuntu 18.04, Thunderbird 52.8.0 system.

First attachment is the license info from the help menu.

Hi Janne,
The second attachment is from the /usr/share/doc/thunderbird/copyright file

Are these two the same on your system? Or, is mine different (updated)?

Thanks

Based on a quick look, they are the same as on my system. As you can see, the /usr/share/doc/thunderbird/copyright file reflects the situation before thunderbird was relicensed to MPL 2.0, and not the current license the software is actually released under.

Hi Janne,
I looked at your other ticket for firefox. You mentioned there that the simplest solution was to remove older files. It looks like they made more progress there. I have attached a screen print of the /usr/share/doc/firefox directory. They have replaced the MPL.gz file with two files (MPL-1.1.gz and MPL-2.0.gz) and the copyright file seems to be updated. Is that what you hoped to have done there for firefox?

Do you want them to do the same for the thunderbird directory? (/usr/share/doc/thunderbird) (screen shot attached in next comment)

I can create a ticket on the Mozilla website to that effect.

Here is a bit of the updated Firefox copyright file. If so, can I ask them to do the same here?

Yes, it seems the firefox package has a /usr/share/doc/firefox that is up to date with the actual license. Something similar for Thunderbird sounds good!

Hi Janne,
I have created an "upstream" bug report at the Thunderbird/Mozilla bug report site called Bugzilla. And I have linked that bug report to this one.

Here is the link to the other report:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1482643

Please feel free to monitor that bug's progress and/or make comments there on that website.

This is as far as I can go on this ticket. I hope they action it soon.
Hope you are well.

AFAIK the /usr/share/doc/thunderbird directory is something added as part of the Debian/Ubuntu packaging, not something that is present in the upstream package. So I'm not sure that upstream will be able to do anything about it.
