Bug Description

Binary package hint: thunar

(xubuntu 8.04rc amd64)
When I insert my removable usb flash pen thunar doubly opens automatically the unit with two windows instead of one.
"Removable Drives and Media" in "Xfce Settings Manager" is set correctly with default settings.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
Date: Wed Apr 23 13:58:55 2008
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.04
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
Package: thunar 0.9.0-4ubuntu2 [modified: usr/bin/Thunar usr/lib/thunar/thunar-sendto-email usr/lib/thunar/thunar-vfs-font-thumbnailer-1 usr/lib/thunar/thunar-vfs-mime-cleaner-1 usr/lib/thunar/thunar-vfs-pixbuf-thumbnailer-1 usr/lib/thunar/thunar-vfs-update-thumbnailers-cache-1 usr/lib/thunar/xfce4/panel-plugins/thunar-tpa]
PackageArchitecture: amd64
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin
 LANG=en_GB.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: thunar
Uname: Linux 2.6.24-16-generic x86_64

WORKAROUND:

This seems to happen when more than one thunar is running. 'pgrep thunar', and kill all but one.

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070801 BonEcho/2.0.0.6
Build Identifier:

If the Thunar's "Browse removable media when inserted" option is enabled and I insert a removable media (ex. USB pen drive), the file manager (Thunar) window is opened 2 times.

This behaviour doesn't happen for every device: I can reproduce it with a 2 GB USB pen drive, but I *can't* reproduce this issue with a 300 GB Firewire drive (the file browser is opened just 1 time).

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enable the "Browse removable media when inserted" option.
2. Insert a device.

Actual Results:
Sometimes the file manager (Thunar) window is opened 2 times.

Expected Results:
It should open the file manager window only 1 time.

I have seen roughly the same bug. I tried both usb-disk and CD, they will be automounted and the icon will be shown on desktop. But two browser windows will be opened.

And if i eject the CD by pressing the release button, two error message dialog will be popped up.

I am experiencing the same for some time - but now it is worse - the browser window opens three times ;)
I am on Xubuntu 8.04: thunar 0.9.0-4ubuntu2; thunar-volman 0.2.0-2ubuntu2
I am using a usb-pendrive with 4 gb capacity and only one big fat32 partition on it. The same happens with my ipod.
Any additional information i may provide to troubleshoot this?

Good call - I had 3 running.
After killing two of them only one window opened when I connected the pendrive.
My problem is solved for now, but I have no clue how I ended up with those 3 instances.
After a reboot there is still only one Thunar running, so it's nothing in my startup scripts.
Maybe some glitch with session management?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? If this bug is still valid, please provide the version of Xubuntu you are using and the version of thunar.

How many Thunar instances are running on your system (pgrep Thunar)?

Thx for your concerns Charlie,

Thunar version is 0.9.0. Xubuntu is Hardy.

"pgrep Thunar" says that 2 instances are running, which is obviously the source of the problem. But I just don't know how these instances have been launched (from which configuration files).

This bug is reported on Xfce Bugzilla Bug #3502 as an open bug, so I linked it to that.

workaround that may work:

1. pgrep Thunar
2. kill the extra instances that are running.

I get this problem, with only 1 thunar process running.

This occurs with 2 different memory sticks:
1) An old 512Mb Lexar Jumpdrive
2) A 4 Gb San Disk Cruzer (the U3 partition does not appear).

and also with an unbranded 3.5 inch external USB HD enclosure with a 40GB drive with a single partition (which may have been formatted on a PowerPC mac but running Linux).

I've not had a chance to check what happens on a firewire drive as all my 6-6 FW cables seem to be at work.

This is on a 32-Bit machine running Thunar 0.9.0 from the Ubuntu (Intrepid Ibex) repositories.

Are you sure you had only 1 thunar process running? You may have more than one thunar processes running even if you have only one thunar window open. At least my computer had two thunar processes running and thus I got two new windows per hotplug.

Re Jarno Suni's question:

Yes, provided that "pgrep thunar" can't overlook a process.

I encountered same problem on RHEL5 with thunar-volman-0.2.0-1.el5.centos.

Each time a new media was inserted multiple file manager windows opened.
If any file manger was previously opened -> only one windows was opend.
If n file manager are opened -> n+1 windows were opened.

When I killed all Thunar process and start it manually : Thunar --daemon
Isaw this error "Thunar: Failed to connect to the D-BUS session bus: Failed to execute dbus-launch to autolaunch D-Bus session".

I installed dbus-x11 to provide exe dbus-launch.
Then the problem of multiple file manager is solved.
Only one window is opened even if several instances of file manager are running or several media are connected.

Hope it helps.

There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version.
