Bug Description

Thunar crashes in Xubuntu 15.10 when I have multiple files highlighted and drag then drop them from one folder to another. One window open using tabs.. Crash happens right after the drop, with one of the files looking like it remained in the original folder but after restarting Thunar I can see that everything I dragged did end up in the folder I dropped them in.

affects: xfdesktop4 (Ubuntu) → thunar (Ubuntu)

I can confirm this bug in Thunar 1.6.10 on two independently installed Xubuntu 15.10 PCs showing the exact same Thunar crash when moving multiply selected files in Thunar from on folder to another folder. So I can pretty much exclude wrong configuration of one single installation.

Since Thunar disappears and doesn't show an error, I find it difficult to encircle this bug, but it happens a lot here. Maybe it's when I move the selected files from one folder to another folder and the two folders are on different partitions?

How can I provide more information, please?

The crash bug doesn't seem to have any connection to moving files between different partitions.
I just selected all the hand-full of the files from a sub-folder and moved them with the mouse to the parent-folder when Thunar crashed, and apport produced the attached log. Like the original poster said, despite the crash the files reached their destination, so the crash appears after Thunar complets the moving operation.

Can we make apport to log more details about how Thunar crashes?

For the first time here, Thunar's crash has been shown on the desktop by Apport, after Thunar had just finished moving files (in particular between partitions linked via folders) .

And attached below is the longer file "/var/crash/_usr_bin_thunar.1000.crash" and I just remove the binary-only dump data.

I can reproduce this bug but its slightly different. While drag and drop does not crash thunar using the clipboard does. Thunar terminates itself with a segmentation fault:

(thunar:11802): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type '(null)' in cast to 'GObject'

(thunar:11802): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_set_qdata: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

It seems this bug was reported before. Take a look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunar/+bug/1439288

I don't think this bug has been reported before, for sure it wasn't there in Xubuntu 14 LTS which I used from the beginning without problems.

On the very same machines (note plural) where Thunar in 14 LTS runs fine, Thunar in Xubuntu 15.10 crashes all the time.

I can confirm however what Jens Herrmann wrote: Thunar crashes also when moving files via the clipboard. And when renaming files. And when using the mouse.
Basically Thunar crashes regularly whenever you move or rename a file.

This Thunar bug is a killer bug rendering Xubuntu to be unusable, but it doesn't happen for all users.
