updmap-sys failed. Output has been stored in
/tmp/updmap.DHJ28087
Please include this file if you report a bug.

Sometimes, not accepting conffile updates in /etc/texmf/updmap.d
causes updmap-sys to fail. Please check for files with extension
.dpkg-dist or .ucf-dist in this directory

Pascal, here is reproduced actions attached.

P.S. According to history, /etc/texmf/updmap.d doesn't contain any .dpkg-dist or .ucf-dist in this directory.
P.P.S. /tmp/upd* missing also.

Attaching that output file. In that output file following seems to be the error

###############################################################################
fmtutil: Error! Not all formats have been built successfully.
Visit the log files in directory
  /var/lib/texmf/web2c
for details.

contents of that directory

$ ls -l /var/lib/texmf/web2c/

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4141 2008-04-07 01:00 updmap.log

updmap.log has no recent log entries.

I have a very similar problem with my texlive 2009 installation on Ubuntu 10.10. My problem is mainly related with three packages: tex-common, texlive-common, texlive-fonts-extra. They do not install correctly, and I get the following message after install:

E: tex-common: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
E: texlive-common: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured
E: texlive-fonts-extra: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

When I look at the details of the error, I see a similar error message as with other people's, which says updmap sys failed and so on..

BTW, I tried to attach the bug report file, but could not copy it..

Thanks!

In case it might help others, here is what I did to solve my problem:

1- Uninstalling and re-installing did not work for me
2- Sudo apt-get -f install tex-common etc. did not work either. The problem persisted.
3- Installing first texlive-common and then the other packages also did not solve it.
4- My solution: The report file (something like updmap.585adb3z in the /tmp folder) stated that the problem was with a map file which was not installed correctly. So I decided to rename the updmap config file located in /etc/texmf/updmap.d/ (the file was 10local.cfg in my case) and then install texlive again.

I was finally able to re-install texlive without any problems. I think if you have a similar problem, you should check the error report file to see if you can do anything. This was not a bug in my case, just some font I was not able to install correctly. %(\footnote{Installing fonts in latex is so awkward. This must be why xelatex makes great sense.})

Aeehmmm -- 10local.cfg was never created b the packags, but by yourself,
so it is your fault if you have some local configuration that is
not working.

We (=packages) are not allowed by policy to change the configuration
files you have changed.

Best wishes
