I had the same problem (I think). The log file /tmp/updmap.* seemed to indicate that some font(?) configuration was goring wrong. Reinstalling or complete removal of all tex related packages did not solve the problem -- at first. Then I looked around what was left of tex after complete removal and found that /etc/texmf was still hanging around. After I removed that by hand a new install of texlive and related packages went just fine. I guess it would be nice if "complete removal" was just that, complete.
