For me the error occurred after updating from 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS (64-bit).

I have 4 OS across 2 HDDs, one containing 2 Windows-7 boots and the main drive containing 2 Ubuntu boots: 14.04 LTS 64x and 12.04 LTS 32x (rarely used).

Attempts to soley use apt-get to repair this failed. I haven't made a serious attempt at fixing it in any other way so far.

As an extra note, I was also missing all of my perl libraries after the update.

I started getting this error immediately after the 12.04LTS to 14.04 LTS upgrade. Like Andrew above, I'm running 64-bit Ubuntu, although in my case it's the only OS on the system.

Ever since, I get this error when I run an update, probably because it never leaves the "to be installed" queue. It also comes up often when I install an app using the Software Centre or apt-get -- the Software Centre gives me a "could not install" error, but the chosen app always does install. Guessing from which apps I get the error for, I'd say the error appears when the app needs tex-common as a resource. Tex-common v4.04 is reported as being installed successfully.

I haven't done much of anything to fix this. Furthermore, I haven't really noticed anything broken -- except when the error message comes up during updates or install/uninstalls.

I'm still getting the error whenever I do an upgrade. I also get the same error twice when starting up: once just after logging in, once shortly after my desktop loads. It doesn't happen if I log out and log back in again without shutting down the machine in between -- only upon a fresh boot.

PLEASE NOTE: I am brand new to the linux Ubuntu os . I have a Gigabyte Z77X-ud5h, Intel 3770k i7, 32gb Corsair DDR3. I was previously runing windows 7 pro 64 bit, booting on a Samsung 500gb SSD. Running games with two Raptor 10000 rpm HDD raid 0 set-up with the built in marvell raid controller worked GREAT!!!!. I also do music production with sonar and fl studio, computer ran above expectations, but the old SSD crashed along with the os and all drivers... my bad, learn from your mistakes right? I decided to install Ubuntu 14.4 after rebuilding my system, the Ubuntu 14.4 install failed several times until i tried an older version, 12.4, the install took all night. After making myself more familiar with the new OS, I upgraded to 14.4 THIS TOOK FOREVER, I have tested for hardware issues but everything is great, Ive got the same errors displayed in this forum, need some help leaving windows in the dust and learning how to take advantage of Ubuntu! I know windows in and out, but some habits are hard to break and would love some help for a new user thanks everyone!

I see there was a fix released in March, but I'm still getting the same behaviour whenever I run an upgrade. Is there anything we need to install manually to apply the bug fix?

I've been watching the package install details every time I update now, looking for clues for what to do to fix this. I can see the part where updating tex-common blows up, but it scrolls by too quickly for me to spot what the error is or what to do about it.

So yes, it's still happening. Every time I run an update Ubuntu tries to update tex-common, and every time it fails. Sometimes that means I'll wind up with error messages upon bootup, which may be safely ignored it seems, but it would be nice to know how to fix this.

I did some searching on this error, and have managed to fix it on my machine. The solution is (to me) risky and not very elegant, but if you want to try it, here it is:

sudo apt-get remove tex-common
sudo rm -rf /etc/texmf
sudo apt-get install tex-common
*** This will generate errors, because the command two lines above blew away the config files. In the error message, Ubuntu will note which commands need to be run to recreate the config files. Run these commands one at a time, running "sudo" before each one (I tried running them together as listed and only the first one worked. No surprise there.) Once the config files are recreated, run the sudo apt-get install tex-common command again. This time it should run with no errors.
sudo apt-get install texlive-*
*** If all has gone well to this point, the texlive install will ask you several times if you want to install generic config files to replace missing ones (because you blew them away when you ran the "rm" command above). Always be sure to answer "y". Note the default is "n", so you can't just hit the Enter key to get past the prompt.

Dear Mr. Lindstroem: (sorry my keyboard doesn't have an umlaut)

I found that my tex installation worked fine without having fixed that

bug. It just gave an annoying message after each update, but everything

worked fine. I suspect that uninstalling the TeX distribution and then

reinstalling it might fix the problem. Things worked OK, except for the

annoying update message even after a subsequent upgrade to 14.04.

At present, I am not using that laptop at present, since I bought a new one

a couple of years ago.

Best regards,

Waldo MacKay
