package tex-common 4.04 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

I was upgrading from 12.04 to 14.04 using the package manager upgrade button. I now have broken apt-get and dpkg. Can't seem to install new packages such as hcidump. Spits out so many errors it exceeds the maximum error reports.
