I don't see where it's doing that *at all*, it doesn't take the type from fstab and place it in mtab -- it needs the "-t $roottype" added to the line to be able to do that.
/dev/hda3 / ext3 errors=remount-ro 0 1
is the fstab entry on my desktop,
/dev/hda2 / xfs defaults 0 1
on my laptop
