I cannot get online (eth0 has no ip address) and X doesn't work, but
ping 127.0.0.1 works.
(when I have no networking, or X I suspected firewall = block all (yes it has happened to me before), but lo works)
Several errors were thrown up at boot then when X failed, it dropped
me to command line. Alternate kernels also have the same problem
(2.6.12...2.6.15 386&686).

When I manually "sudo dhcp" I get permission errors.
