If you are getting the same thing using upstart, I doubt this is a systemd issue TBH (especially as we didn't get any update recently).
Can you go to a tty and attach hre the journal logs? (journalctl -b output) also the ouptut of "sudo systemctl status -l ddms" would helpful.
