Hmm, that is interesting. The config option is there for backward compatibility. To make the kernel work with older userspace (those predating 13.1 in this case).

The bug seems to be that the kernel fails to load the firmware and falls back to udev loading.

Can you provide the dmesg output from a machine booted with the delay?
