I've just tried adding the printer in fedora 8, and it works by adding
  ipp://user:pwd@server:port/printer

when comparing the printers.conf file entries,
Ubuntu does not add the
  AuthInfoRequired username,password
line.

But even when using the printers.conf from fedora and restarting cups it does not work.
