The backtrace is unfortunately not very helpful. Is this problem reproducable? Does it happen often/always for you? If so, I would love to get a gdb backtrace of the crash.

The problem appears approximately *every other time*. I do not know how to
reproduce it insofar as it appears with the opening of the session under
Gnome.

Could you please check in your "session" control panel program if synaptic is set to auto-start for some reason?

After selecting "Mark All Upgrades", while synaptic is going through the update of the packages... then the app crashed. This has happened twice so far, however everything else is ok.

Re-opening Synaptic shows that all the updates were infact done by dpkg.

@Ducke: if the crash happend on a feisty system, do you have a apport crashfile then? it would be very helpful if you could add that to this bugreport.
