Bug Description

The requested functionality is equal to 'File/Save Markings' with the 'Select full state, not only changes' set and automatically saving the state of all packages. Could be named something like 'File/Save installed state'

Alternatively the default function of 'Save Markings' could be change to have the 'Select full state, not only changes' set. And the name changed to the proposed 'File/Save installed state'.

The feature is there, but apparently it is not easy enough to discover. Please use "File/Save markings" and check the box "Select full state, not only changes".

Feedback in how to improve the discoverability of this feature is very welcome!

Thanks,
 Michael

I think this should just have a name change. A simple File -> Export Package List would be better than Save Markings. Since this is exactly the wording of the various requests I've seen towards this. I know this is an old bug report, but just thought I'd add my two cents.

Actually maybe it'd make a little more sense to put it under "Package" heading instead of file.

By the way, I'm currently using Feisty Fawn with the version of Synaptic being 0.57.12. Very nice that you have an option to generate a script to download the selected packages on a different Install. Not sure if it supports this, but it'd be nice to also add to this script a feature where it adds the third party repositories that some of the software possibly comes in for Synaptic to be able to install ALL of the packages in the package list. Since most people use third party repositories.

This is still a bug as per Mon 18 Aug 2008 in Feisty.

I marked all installed packages for "reinstallation".
This then allowed the script generator to work.

But the script that it generated looked like ;

"
#!/bin/sh
wget -c
wget -c
wget -c
wget -c
wget -c
wget -c
wget -c
wget -c
wget -c
wget -c
"
[etc .....]

This doesn't look like it would install any package.

So that makes two problems.
1) Script generator needs a quirky work-around user manually input-ed procedure to work,
and
2) even then it doesn't work properly.

Note :
See an equivalent (but more successful) function for debian's dpkg at ;

Searching through the bugs on Launchpad I figured that we should change this bug in a wish list item with a new title [This is a suggestion, comments welcome]:

When no objections are raised I will change this next week.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as triaged and let them handle it from here. Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

It's kinda sad that it is June 2014 and this still doesn't work (14.04 LTS):
"Generate package download script" creates a shell script with just

"#!/bin/sh"

in it. If a user is supposed to select or mark anything, at least this menu item should prompt the user to do so.
