update breaks openvpn, affects wicd

Bug Description
I installed a bunch of updates including an update to sun-java. After reboot wicd suddenly required authentication for managing the network, and I found my openvpn wasn't working.
service openvpn restart
brought openvpn back online, but this step wasn't necessary before the updates. Currently I suspect that the java-update has broken my configuration to some extent.
