I'm running GNOME, so the default Java Look and Feel should be GTK. This can be accomplished by creating /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.06/jre/lib/swing.properties with the following contents:
swing.defaultlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel
If this is rejected, then I'd like to see a symlink from that path to /etc/java-6-sun/swing.properties (or some other way to make the JRE honor that path) so that I can set this in /etc (where settings belong) instead of in /usr/lib/jvm/...
