I just noticed that the same problem is discussed in bug #24217. That report was in the "CLOSED" state at the time I filed this, but has been re-opened in december. As it was re-opened by someone with a @canonical.com -email address, I am hesitant to myself close it as a duplicate of this one, even though I understand that prioritizing earlier reports is by no means the sole criterion of deciding which one to mark as a duplicate.

Having spent time on tracking this issue, I feel confident enough to say that this report more usefully pinpoints the issue at hand. Namely, that sudo has built-in features to solve the situation (these being 'sudo -k', 'sudo -K' and, if so desired, 'sudo -v'), but something prevents the features from working as intended and as defined in the application's man page.
