So is there a papercut for taking the terminal out of the desktop .iso by default and then forcing desktop users to install it via Synaptic if they want it? Or taking all terminal commands out of the community site documentation? New users aren't pasting in terminal commands they've memorized. They are getting these commands from tutorials targeted at new users.

If you are going to take the "Well, new users shouldn't be using the terminal anyway" approach, you have to fully back that approach and not encourage them to use the terminal.
