I have a HP Eny 6 1006sa sleekbook that has A6-4455M APU with Radeon HD 7500G Discrete-Class Graphics. For a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 install I additionally installed the fglrx video graphics drivers, on reboot I login and get just a desktop wall paper image with no Unity desk top. Unity fails to start from the command line. I looked at the dependencies for the fglrx driver and checked they were present using Synaptic. I noted two Kernel packages were missing. Installing these packages following a fresh 12.10 install enabled trouble free install of the fglrx and then fglrx updates graphics drivers. The two kenel packages missing were:
1) linux-generic Version 3.5.0.17.19
2) linux-headers-generic Version 3.5.0.17.19
My var/log/instal/syslog is attached. I noted the generic Kernel files are purged.
I've added this comment as its a serious Bug affecting many non-technical users. I note that bug #1070427 has been fixed for Precise but there is no mention as far I can tell if the fix is included for the current latest stable release 12.10? Please state if the fix has been rolled out for 12.10 updates.
