As instructed, this is a split from bug 972310.

Related bugs: (to be added in a few minutes)
Consider an item available from non-Canonical repositories, e.g. yad (ppa:webupd8team/y-ppa-manager).
If the item is not yet installed (e.g. yad), Ubuntu Software Centre simply does not display it:
Using yad as an example:
1. Add yad's PPA (sudo apt-add-repository ppa:webupd8team/y-ppa-manager). Run sudo apt-get update.
2. In Ubuntu Software Centre, go to the "All Software" tab.
3. Type "yad" into the search bar.
4. Only Yade displays. It should also display yad (yad can be seen in Synaptic Package Manager).
5. Fascinatingly, if you install the package (via the terminal or Synaptic Package Manager) and then uninstall it, Ubuntu Software Centre will now display it even after restarting the computer. |
