Bug Description

To reproduce:
1. Using a lower resolution monitor, take your window, drag it to one side of the screen, or the other, so that it "sticks"/"pins" to the side of your screen.

You will now notice that the search bar is missing, it is my thoughts that this is happening because when you pin the window to the side of the screen it makes it smaller than it is supposed to go.

screenshot: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/927243/+attachment/2717132/+files/software%20center%20bug.png

This is because Compiz is forcing the window to be smaller than the minimum software center window size.

The best fix might be to make it so the search bar can expand and shrink with the window, perhaps.

Release: 11.10 + 12.04

software-center:
  Installed: 5.0.4

Thanks for your bugreport.

When I set my display to a small resolution (like 1024x768) and push it to the side I can reproduce the bug.
Doing that just by trying to resize the window will not work as there is a minimal size that will be honored.

I wonder if that is a problem with compiz actually that it forces the window to a size that is below its minimium size.

I do agree with you that the window is being forced below it's minimum width. I'm not sure who is at fault for that tho, compiz, or software-center. Depending on how you look at it, both could be blamed in different scenarios.

The normal resolution i use, (and experience the problem in) is: 1440x900

Thanks Dylan, I add a compiz task to get input on how they view it. I don't know currently what more I can do on the application side other than to set a minimum size.

Can this be reproduced in unity2d?

@Chauncellor, It can not be reproduced in unity2d. Unity2d does not currently have the window snap feature that seems to be causing this problem.

Well, I can't reproduce this on 12.04. Which isn't to say the bug isn't there, but I would consider this s a software-center thing which, regardless, has been fixed as some point.

If i may, what is your resolution?

Ah, I just did this at 1024x768 (hadn't done it at a low-enough resolution) and it does trigger on 12.04.

Regardless, I think this not a compiz bug since it's doing what it's supposed to. Software-center should provide functionality for handling this (should it desire to) and, most importantly, have a smaller minimum resolution size.

I think that if the issue is for compiz to be forbidden to forcibly put windows below their minimum size, there should be another bug specifically for that as I interpret this report to be specifically about software-center's search bar mishaps.

Sorry for all the noise in the last few posts, by the way.

This bug is a slightly confused combination of two bugs.

First, Compiz resizes a window to less than its minimum width if you semi-maximize it on the left, but not if you semi-maximize it on the right. This is bug 723855.

Second, USC hides its search field even when at its proper minimum width. This is bug 876553.

I'm slightly confused by the information you have given above Matthew, In my experience "First, Compiz resizes a window to less than its minimum width if you semi-maximize it on the left, but not if you semi-maximize it on the right." is invalid for me, it happens on both sides. Secondly in my experience "USC hides its search field even when at its proper minimum width. " is not true for me either. If neither of these things happen in my case, are you sure that this is actually the same bug? I'm only questioning this in hopes that it may provide you with more information on the other issues as well.

@ matthew, i just read your second comment now, that does make things clearer, but the right side, left side issues do not hold true in my case, they both provide the same result
