This seems linked to some other issues being exhibited in aptitude. So, this crash is almost identical to the crash I experienced earlier today. It all seems to be a problem with the locale.
I'm using EN-UTF-8. I also have localepurge installed with the following output:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure localepurge
perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
LANGUAGE = (unset),
LC_ALL = (unset),
LANG = "en_US.UTF-8"
are supported and installed on your system.
perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C").
