Maciej I've re-enabled the snapd service and will report bag with the results of those debug commands you've suggested when it starts heavy disk usage again.

I'll add I've never seen such long, sustained and intense disk access/thrashing apart from when doing large drive to drive backups. I only have 3 or 4 extra snaps installed over the default which comes with ubuntu 20.04 and my slow internet connection isn't capable of downloading data fast enough to cause my SSD to go into overdrive.
