This seems to be related to the drivers/backends. These change with Ubuntu releases independant of simple-scan, and have a tendency to be rather fragile. Can someone confirm that there is a problem with the following setup:

- hp scanner (please scpecify exactly)
- Ubuntu 12.04 precise (beta/stable)
- simple-scan, xsane, hplip installed
- running simple-scan, then xsane, then simple-scan again
