Bug Description

Binary package hint: simple-scan

The current package results in french to the installation of "numérisation simple".
Translating the name of the software is an error (unfortunately not uncommon in Ubuntu) :
- Generally speaking, Superman is known as Superman (not superhomme...). Translating names is old-fashioned, and generally avoided now (eg. cities).
That leads further problems:
- The application menu, the title bar display "numérisation simple" while Internet, blog, help file, about dialog box, and package name refer to the real name "simple scan".

It's somewhat sad Robert didn't choose a less generic name for his tool. Couldn't we translate it just like Flegita was called "Outil de numérisation"? We could simply ensure upstream doesn't show the name of the tool in the menu label.

Robert, any thoughts about that?

Hi Milan,

I'm not sure what the French translation was - is "Outil de numérisation" a name like "Scan Tool"? (i.e. are you suggesting we do what we did for the Calculator (project name is gcalctool, menu name is Calculator)).

I think gcalctool is a counter productive example. Do no using the real name carry over later communication problems.
So current problem bypass simple-scan case. The lack of rules is the fundamental problem.
- Authors should be encourage to don't use name that exclude other softwares. "Simple scan" is a wrong name. None other can be simple? Other should be complex? Author shouldn't be worry or afraid to personalize the name of their software. We all communicate using name and surname.
- In accordance, It will be better to use 2 terms inside the menu :
   + Calculator Gcalctool
   + Scan Flegita
   + Scan Gscan2pdf
   + Text Abiword
=> Please stop to use "tools", "manager" and other empty terms. Especially because menu become complex and because they apply to everything without carrying a particular sense.
- The significant word appears delayed into the sequence of words rather than at first.
- The alphabetical ordering doesn't work and you have to search sometimes e.g. "scan", "tool", "flegita"... at start or at the end of the menu.
(admin or preference menus illustrate these limits).

Why not "Numérisation Simple Scan"

Is that fix released already?

Is there any demand for discussing the project's name and/or the label for the menu item?

Best Regards
Michael
