Ok, I got my HP M477 to work with simple-scan by downloading/installing the hp-plugin. (sudo hp-plugin)
ADF doesn't work, but this could be an issue of hplip 3.16.3.

If you have an HP printer, you could check if "sudo hp-plugin" solves the problem for you. (I didn't try anything else)
