The residual network startup script also seems to cause intermittent problems when bringing up multiple aliases of a physical network interface..
confirmed sendmail-base and sendmail-bin removed, not running network-manager (is a server).
for now: for i in `locate sendmail | grep -v dpkg`; do sudo mv -R $i /dev/null; done
